Sustainability at Unicorn Farm

Unicorn Farm Nursery & Landscaping is committed to promoting sustainable practices in all aspects of plant production and landscape design. Located in the lush environment of Asheville, NC, our company strives to integrate eco-friendly techniques in our greenhouse operations, water management systems, and integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.

Greenhouse Operations and Sustainability

Our greenhouse is a hub of innovation where we prioritize energy efficiency and sustainable plant production. We harness solar energy to power our greenhouse operations, including lighting, ventilation, and heating systems. This renewable energy source reduces our carbon footprint and operational costs.

We use organic and locally sourced growing media, such as compost and hardwood fines, to minimize the use of peat, which is a non-renewable resource. This choice supports soil health and promotes sustainable agriculture.

Efficient water use is a cornerstone of our greenhouse operations. We employ a closed-loop irrigation system that recycles water and nutrients, reducing waste and conserving resources. Additionally, we collect rainwater to supplement our irrigation needs, further decreasing our reliance on municipal water supplies.

Our commitment to sustainability extends to pest management. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a holistic approach that combines biological, cultural, physical, and chemical tools to manage pests in an environmentally friendly manner.

Landscape Design

We introduce beneficial insects, such as ladybugs and predatory mites, to control pest populations naturally. These biological agents help maintain a balanced ecosystem within our greenhouses and landscapes. We implement proper spacing, and companion planting to reduce the incidence of pests and diseases. By promoting plant diversity and health, we create a more resilient ecosystem.

When necessary, we use targeted, low-toxicity pesticides that have minimal impact on non-target organisms and the environment. This selective approach ensures that chemical interventions are a last resort and are used responsibly.

Water is a vital resource in horticulture, and its conservation is a key focus of our sustainability efforts. We utilize drip irrigation and soaker hoses, which deliver water directly to the plant roots, reducing evaporation and runoff. This method ensures efficient water use and promotes healthy plant growth. We have installed rainwater harvesting systems to collect and store rainwater for irrigation. This practice reduces our dependence on municipal water supplies and provides a sustainable water source during dry periods.

Our landscape designs prioritize the use of native and drought-tolerant plant species, which require less water and are better adapted to local climatic conditions. We also incorporate mulching and organic soil amendments to retain soil moisture and reduce watering needs.

We design landscapes that incorporate features such as bioswales, rain gardens, and permeable pavements to manage stormwater runoff. These features help filter pollutants and reduce the risk of flooding while replenishing groundwater supplies.

We encourage the integration of edible plants into ornamental landscapes. This approach not only provides fresh produce but also promotes sustainability by reducing the need for transportation and packaging of food.

We design landscapes that provide habitat for local wildlife, including birds, pollinators, and beneficial insects. By incorporating elements such as birdhouses, butterfly gardens, and water features, we create vibrant ecosystems that support biodiversity.

Sustainability Commitment

Unicorn Farm Nursery & Landscaping is dedicated to leading the way in sustainable horticultural practices. Our comprehensive approach encompasses energy-efficient greenhouse operations, integrated pest management, sustainable water management, and eco-friendly landscape design. By implementing these practices, we not only enhance the beauty and functionality of the landscapes we create but also contribute to the conservation of our natural resources. As stewards of the environment, we are committed to continually exploring innovative ways to reduce our ecological footprint and promote sustainability in the horticultural industry.
